Deadline for Sioux City Mayor’s Youth Commission applications
Any 9th or 10th grade student enrolled in a Sioux City high school or reside in Sioux City but attend a school outside of Sioux City or students who are home schooled and live in Sioux City are eligible for membership on the Youth Commission. Applications are available in school offices, the City Clerk’s office during the month of October, and can be downloaded at www.siouxlandcares.org. Eligible students must complete an application by October 31. For more information contact Siouxland CARES.
beSomebody Video Contest
Make a Video! Tell Your Friends! Win Cash! Make a Difference!
Briar Cliff and Siouxland CARES want YOU to beSomebody!!
Students–Create a clip showing how you and your friends are being the change you want to see in the world. The focus of the video should address the problem of bullying in your community and how the problem is being/should be addressed. Here are some examples of ideas you can highlight.
- What is your school doing now to prevent bullying?
- What more should your school be doing to prevent bullying?
- How could your school partner (or do more) with your larger community to create a broader campaign to prevent bullying?
- Any number of students can participate in the video and the video must be under two minutes
- One entry allowed per school
- Videos must be uploaded to YouTube and marked as unlisted, then the URL provided must be submitted. Instruction on how to upload to YouTube are located on the beSomebody Facebook page
- Video must be entered in the governor’s video competition to be eligible to win! Go to https://preventbullying.iowa.gov/video-contest for details
- Winners of the Governor’s contest receive cash and a visit from Gov. Branstad!
- Deadline for videos is Oct. 10th
- For local entry, email mark.samuelson@briarcliff.edu the unlisted YouTube URL by midnight on October 10th
- Name of video, school, and team name are required in the email
- Videos will be judged by our selected beSomebody panel
- Winners will receive $250. One winner for high schools and one winner for middle schools
- Winners will also present their video at a press conference October 28th and create their own Public Service Announcement on the radio with Clear Channel

Prescription Drug Take Back Day October 26
The next national prescription drug Take Back day is Saturday, October 26. That’s when the DEA, local law enforcement agencies, community organizations and businesses will work together to collect unused medicines. To organize or find the Take Back site closest to you, go to http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback.
Additionally, Iowans may return old non-controlled prescription medicines to Iowa pharmacies that participate in the Iowa Pharmacy Association’s TakeAway program. This ongoing voluntary program is separate from the Take Back days, but only accepts prescription medicines that are not subject to abuse. To find pharmacies participating in the TakeAway program, go to http://www.iarx.org/takeaway.
WHY DO WE CELEBRATE RED RIBBON WEEK?
The Red Ribbon Campaign originated when Federal Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was murdered by drug traffickers in 1985. On February 7, 1985, he was on his way to meet his wife and their three sons for lunch in Mexico where they lived at the time. He didn’t show up. Nearly a month later, on March 5, the body of Kiki Camarena was found. He had been tortured and murdered. Enrique spent his life dedicated to making a visible effort to eradicate illegal drugs from our communities. In response to his death, communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of the commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America. Red Ribbon Week is dedicated to teaching drug prevention in our school systems and community.
The red ribbon symbolizes a commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle…no use of any illegal drug and no illegal use of a legal drug.

The following curfew is now in effect in Sioux City, Sergeant Bluff, and Woodbury County, Iowa, North Sioux City, South Dakota, South Sioux City, Nebraska, and Dakota County, Nebraska. Please enforce these times in your home.
10:00 p.m. for minors under the age of 14
11:00 p.m. for minors ages 14 and 15
Midnight for minors ages 16 and 17
About Siouxland CARES
Siouxland CARES (Community-wide Awareness, Resources, Education and Support) About Substance Abuse is a community coalition comprised of 350 volunteers. Volunteers for Siouxland CARES (representing 12 community systems) and staff contributed 16,296 hours in 2012 to CARES programs and services. The mission of CARES is to improve the quality of life in Siouxland by eliminating the abuse of alcohol and other drugs and related violence.
