MYTH:  Hosting underage drinking parties is harmless.
FACT:   Think again.  Underage drinking kills 5,000 young people a year.

If you’re serious about preventing underage alcohol and drug abuse in Siouxland…Don’t allow underage drinking parties to happen in your home or allow your children to go to them.  Double check the plans with your child.  Know the facts; keep our children safe and healthy!!

Youth Start Using Most Substances
During the Summer

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports that that youths between the ages of 12 and 17 are far more likely to start using most substances during the summer than during other parts of the year.  A recent study found that on an average day in June and July, more than 11,000 adolescents aged 12 to 17 use alcohol for the first time – December is the only other month with comparable levels. Throughout the rest of the year the daily average for first-time alcohol use ranges from 5,000 to 8,000 adolescents.

Start Talking Before They Start Drinking!!

Talk to Your Child About
Alcohol Poisoning

Symptoms of alcohol poisoning:

  • Person is unconscious or semi-conscious and cannot be awakened.
  • Cold, clammy, pale, or bluish skin.
  • Check to see if breathing is slow, less than 8 times per minute, or irregular, with 10 seconds or more between breaths.
  • Vomiting while “sleeping” or passed out, and not waking up after vomiting.

If a person has any of these symptoms, he or she is suffering from acute alcohol intoxication and is in danger.

  • Get help.  Call someone, a staff member, an ambulance, public safety, anyone who can help. Call 911.
  • Do not leave the person alone.  Turn the victim on his/her side to prevent choking in case of vomiting.
  • Always be “better safe than sorry” if you are not sure what to do.  How can your friend be angry about you caring for him/her?
