MYTH:  Drinking and driving a boat is okay.
FACT:   Alcohol reduces reaction time and your ability to make quick, sound judgments in an emergency situation.  Don’t drink and drive!

Holiday Safety–Every July 4th holiday, thousands of Americans drive after drinking alcohol or using drugs.  Impaired driving is no accident.  Every 40 minutes and nearly 40 times a day, someone in the United States dies in an alcohol impaired traffic crash according to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

A statistical projection of traffic fatalities shows that an estimated 34,080 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2012. This represents an increase of about 5.3 percent as compared to the 32,367 fatalities that occurred in 2011.  If these projections are realized, 2012 will be first year with a year-to-year increase in fatalities since 2005. Traffic fatalities have been steadily declining over the previous six years since reaching a near-term peak in 2005, decreasing by about 26 percent from 2005 to 2011.

Much of the drunk driving tragedies can be prevented with a few simple precautions before going out to celebrate. Whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate your sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.  If you’re impaired, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.  If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

The blood alcohol level for boating while intoxicated is .08–the same as a motor vehicle.  Remember that wind, sun, glare off the water, and water movement multiplies the effects of alcohol.  Help reduce vessel accidents, injuries and fatalities on the water by knowing your limits….08–Don’t Go Overboard. www.iowadnr.gov.

Remember, Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving. Don’t ever get behind a wheel of a vehicle when you are impaired.

Best friends influence when teenagers take first drink

The Spring 2013 University of Iowa Magazine reports that best friends influence when teenagers take their first drink.  A national study by a UI-led team has found that adolescents who get their first drink from a friend-and not necessarily a family member-are more likely to drink sooner in life, which past studies show makes them more prone to abusing alcohol when they get older.  The researchers, led by Samuel Kuperman, professor of psychiatry in the UI Carver College of Medicine, looked at how five predictors of adolescent drinking behavior worked in concert.  They found that having a best friend who drank and had access to alcohol was the most important predictor.  In fact, adolescents whose best friend used alcohol were twice as likely to have a first drink.  The results also underscore previous findings that teenagers who have their first drink before 15 years of age are more likely to abuse alcohol or become dependent.  Start talking before they start drinking!
